Alleged Gunman, 20, Pleads Not Guilty to Double Murder at Penmar Park in Venice

Michael Anthony Mariscal pleads not guilty Wednesday to charges that he murdered two people and wounded a third in a June 2011 shooting at Penmar Park in Venice.

A 20-year-old Culver City man accused of shooting to death two teenagers at Penmar Park in Venice in June 2011 pleaded not guilty Wednesday during his arraignment at the Airport Branch Courthouse. Michael Anthony Mariscal has been charged with capital murder for the slaying of Salvador Diaz Jr. and Alan Mateo, who were both 18. Mariscal also is accused of wounding a third man. Mariscal, wearing a blue Los Angeles County Jail jumpsuit with his wrists and ankles shackled, entered his plea before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Katherine Mader and also denied the special allegations that make him eligible for the death penalty. Public defender Richard Caillouette represented Mariscal and asked that a separate case in which Mariscal is…

Water Main Break in Venice Prompts Street Closure

A water main break near the Venice Canals is prompting authorities to close off a portion of eastbound South Venice Boulevard as crews work to minimize damage.

A water main break near the Venice Canals prompted authorities to close off a portion of South Venice Boulevard on Friday afternoon as firefighters worked to pump the water out of an underground parking structure. The water main burst about 12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Carroll Canal and Dell Avenue, officals said. It started flooding the underground parking garage of a two-story residential complex in the 200 block of South Venice Boulevard, said Capt. Milton Urquilla of the Los Angeles Fire Department's Venice-based Fire Station 63. A fire engine and several fire trucks were at the scene using pumps to create a draft to keep the water from rising in the garage until the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power could shut down the …

Another answer for why they spend countless man-hours at Officer-involved shootings, Chuck, is because often police are the only witnesses, and in the past have been known to doctor the crime-scene to make Police-Murder magically become 'justifiable homicide'. In one Deputy-involved shooting in S. LA or Compton - despite Deputies' accounts otherwise, eyewitnesses claimed that the shooter was …   more ›

Third Lawsuit Challenges LAPD Car Impound Policy

The conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch is suing the Los Angeles Police Department over its new policy for impounding cars of unlicensed drivers.

The conservative government watchdog group Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit challenging the Los Angeles Police Department's new policy liberalizing procedures for impounding cars of unlicensed drivers, the group announced Wednesday. The suit filed Tuesday by the group based in Washington, D.C., is the third suit filed in as many months challenging the policy. The suit on behalf of Harold Sturgeon of Los Angeles asks a judge to rule that the department's impound policy is an unlawful use of taxpayer money specifically "to help unlicensed illegal aliens." In February, the Police Commission, which provides civilian oversight of the LAPD, approved the policy to allow a driver who is stopped for a moving violation, and who has valid …

What is "valid identification"? Traditionally it has been a driver's license. During a recent radio interview I heard L.A. Police Chief Beck mention the metricula counsular card as acceptable identification (Do a key words search on FBI Metricula Consular Steven McCraw Consular Cards in a Post 9/11 World). From information I've read it seems the Matricula Consular card depends on the applicant's …   more ›

Authorities Seize, Return Stolen Bikes

Authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts of area mountain bikes with an estimated total value of $250,000.

Authorities on Wednesday sought victims of a ring of thieves who stole nearly 200 expensive mountain bicycles with an estimated total value of $250,000. Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said authorities have arrested three men allegedly involved in the thefts: Julian Herrera, 23, and his brother Jamie Herrera, 21, both of Los Angeles; and Alberto Mejia, 34, of Colton. A news conference was planned this morning, when officials will display 20 recovered bicycles and 40 recovered wheels and ask victims to come forward and retrieve their property. The thieves allegedly used social media, including Craigslist, to target victims in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, Nishida said. Detectives …

'Explosive Threat Bandit' Charged in Bank Robberies

A 32-year-old man allegedly used fake bombs in robberies across Los Angeles, including at banks in Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica.

A federal grand jury has indicted the so-called “Explosive Threat Bandit,” suspected in a string of robberies in Southern California, including Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica, the FBI announced Saturday.  William Joseph Allen, 32, was charged on eight counts of robbery and attempted robbery. Detectives in Santa Monica used forensic evidence from a March 29 bank heist to identify him. During bank robberies, Allen allegedly dropped off packages of electronic components and wiring as he told tellers that someone outside the bank would detonate the bomb if his flight was interrupted. On other occasions, he would brandish a gun and demand cash, handing notes such as “the establishment will not exist,” if the teller did not comply. The …

Photos: May Day in Los Angeles

Do you have May Day photos? If so, please consider adding them to our gallery.

Service workers at Los Angeles International Airport went on strike Tuesday in conjunction with other May Day labor celebrations and protests and busloads of union workers joined a rally inside the airport and march onto Century Boulevard. More than 1,000 union workers belonging to SEIU 1877 - United Service Workers West protested inside the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX and then marched onto Century Boulevard where a planned act of "civil disobedience" occurred. There was a heavy police presence on Century Boulevard as several men and women sat in the middle of the intersection in a protest of civil disobedience. Four men and six women were taken into custody about 2:15 p.m. and most of the protesters dispersed afterward. Did …

22 Riot-Related Homicides Unsolved, Including Venice Killing

Twenty years after the L.A. Riots, 22 homicides remain unsolved, including a killing in Venice.

Twenty-two riot-related homicides remain unsolved. Officially, 53 people died in the violence that broke out 20 years ago, fueled by the acquittal of four white police officers in the videotaped beating of a black man at the end of a car chase. Nearly 1,600 buildings were destroyed or damaged and some 2,300 people were injured -- mostly over the first three days. The damage was estimated at more than $1 billion, including $735 million in property damage. Of the 53 people killed, 35 died from gunshot wounds, including eight people fatally shot by law enforcement officers and two killed by National Guard soldiers. Of the eight people killed by law enforcement, six were killed by Los Angeles police officers, one by a sheriff's deputy, and one…

The L.A. Riots—20 Years Later

What lessons have we learned as Angelenos from the worst rioting in recent memory?

April 29 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 L.A. Riots. The widely televised upheaval, also referred to as the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest, was sparked by the acquittal of four LAPD officers—three white and one Latino—who were accused of brutally beating an African American man, Rodney King, in 1991. Over the next several days, Los Angeles exploded into a frenzy of violence, looting, arson and murder that began in what was then predominantly black South-Central L.A (now named South L.A., a predominantly Latino area). According to one of the most reliable estimates, the rioting claimed 53 lives, left thousands injured and reportedly damaged property worth $1 billion. The office of Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who …
