Betsy Butler's bill that would create Veterans' Courts throughout California passes the Assembly and moves onto the state Senate.
An Assembly bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-Los Angeles) that would create Veterans' Courts throughout California passed the Assembly on Thursday and will head to the state Senate for consideration. "Our current court and corrections system is not equipped to address the unique needs of veterans struggling because it lacks rehabilitation services and fails to address the underlying issues that specific to the traumas of military service,” Butler said in a statement. The proposed Veterans' Court would be modeled after the drug courts to assist veterans dealing with addiction, mental health issues and co-occurring disorders. The Veterans' Courts would promote sobriety, recovery and stability and would include collaboration …

Current Assemblywoman Betsy Butler has the most cash on hand, followed closely by Torie Osborn in the election for the 50th Assembly District.
With sizable donations from unions and colleagues at the state Capital, first-term state legislator Betsy Butler is boasting the biggest campaign war chest in the race for the 50th Assembly District. Butler reported having $463,687 on hand in the most recent filings with the Secretary of Sate ahead of the June 5 primary. While firefighter and labor unions, lawmakers and political action committees cut Butler big checks, she wasn’t the only candidate to rake in more than a quarter of a million dollars from January to mid-March. And, she wasn’t spending the most, either. Torie Osborn—the grassroots organizer who snagged endorsements this winter from most of the area’s local Democratic clubs—reported $429,450 and outspent Butler by $28,679 …

If approved by the Assembly, the California Disclose Act would require that the largest campaign donors be disclosed in TV, radio, Web and printed political ads.
Public interest groups are urging citizens to back a bill up for a vote Tuesday in the California Assembly that would require the disclosure of large donors to political ads seen by voters across the state. Under AB 1148, also known as the California Disclose Act, the three largest donors to political advertising on TV and radio as well as those in mailers and Web sites would need to be named. "This would be a huge win for democracy in California, allowing citizens to give proper weight to the different messages they hear and make informed decisions at the ballot box," said MapLight, a nonprofit that tracks the influence of money in politics, in an email message to supporters. Other organizations that have registered their support of the …

The deadline passes for Gov. Jerry Brown to sign bills into law. Here's a list of what Assemblymember Betsy Butler, D-Marina del Rey, did (and didn't) get done this term.
You can tell a lot from a legislator's bills. They reflect a representative's priorities, and, hopefully, the priorities of his or her district. Below is a list of the bills Assemblymember Betsy Butler, D-Marina del Rey, introduced this year*. Bills signed into law: AB 1319 – Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act, signed Oct. 4. California law will now prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of baby bottles and sippy cups that contain more than 0.1 parts per billion (ppb) of BPA. AB 1319 provides children from every community access to safe, non-toxic baby products and significantly decreases their exposure to a chemical that has been linked to a host of health problems, including early puberty, breast and prostate cancer, infertility…
