Boardwalk vendors and the Los Angeles Police Department ready themselves as the enforcement date of the Ocean Front Walk ordinance draws near.
The scene on the westside of the Venice Beach boardwalk has been an ever-changing landscape of merchants hawking clothes and incense, artists selling original artwork and street performers who dance, leap and even stomp on razor-sharp glass. Some of this will change Jan. 20 when the latest Ocean Front Walk ordinance (see attached) goes into effect. The new ordinance, which was approved Dec. 13 by the Los Angeles City Council, revises and defines the exact items that will be prohibited and allowed to be sold on 205 spaces on the western side of the boardwalk. The ordinance would ban the sale of common items with a "non-expressive purpose," such as clothes, sunglasses, incense, candy, crystals, oils, jewelry and toys. It also would prohibit …

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approves a Venice Beach boardwalk ordinance that will regulate commercial vending along Ocean Front Walk.
The henna tattoo artists, incense sellers and T-shirt hawkers on the western side of the popular Venice Beach boardwalk will have to find new places to set up shop after the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an ordinance prohibiting commercial vending along Ocean Front Walk. "We finally have in place an ordinance we all feel we can defend," said Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl after the 12-0 vote. "It supports the local community's interest in wanting to go forward. Over the years the commercial vendors had taken over the west side [of Ocean Front Walk] and it's not fair to vendors on the east side, where people pay taxes." The first version of Ocean Front Walk legislation, known as Los Angeles Municipal …
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approves an Ocean Front Walk ordinance that limits commercial vending and noise on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk.
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a new Ocean Front Walk ordinance limiting commercial vending on the Venice Beach boardwalk. The ordinance seeks to "restrict vending, regulates performing and prohibits the generation of excessive noise on the Venice Boardwalk and adjacent beach and public spaces." The ordinance amending Los Angeles Municipal Code 42.15 has been revised several times since 2006, disputed and even blocked by a federal court on the grounds of being unconstitutional. The latest ordinance also came with controversy Tuesday with more than 30 people offering public comment, with many against it. Supporters of the ordinance, including Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, have said it is …

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday will consider an ordinance regulating vending and noise on the Venice Beach boardwalk.
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday will consider an ordinance regulating vending on the Venice Beach boardwalk that largely restricts the sale of commercial goods and services. The draft ordinance regulating vending on Ocean Front Walk would prohibit commercial vending and designate certain areas for artists and performers to set up and perform. The ordinance (see attached) would designate 205 spaces on the boardwalk for use on a first-come, first-served system and would prohibit anyone from setting up or reserving a space between sunset and 9 a.m. It would set aside five, double-sized spaces for performers who must relinquish the space on the hour, if someone else is waiting to perform. The ordinance would ban the sale of clothes, …

As a resident, this is far too long in coming. I am thrilled that the city is going to help the tent city residents find help from shelters, etc. As a Vendor of Dance (Hula) Hoops on OFW, I will be put out of business. Will the LAPD help me find a new home for my business? It is to the credit of so many fellow Venetians that I have been able to bring a little laughter and joy out there. I thank …   more ›
