Skate Contests at Venice Skate Park Benefit Westside Food Bank

Skatboarders will compete while donating food to those in need this holiday season during the Makaha 50th Anniversary Bowl Jam and Food Drive 2013 at Venice Skate Park.

Makaha Skateboards is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the Makaha Bowljam, a snake run and mini bowl contest that serves as a food drive, in Venice on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The Makaha 50th Anniversary Bowl Jam and Food Drive 2013 - Venice Skatepark is set to take place at the Venice Skate Park beginning at 9 a.m. It commemorates the first skateboard contest put on in Santa Monica by Larry Stevenson, Makaha's founder, in 1963.

The event is put on in association with the Westside Food Bank, and profits will be used to feed those in need this holiday season. Donations are being accepted, as well, according to the event website.

Skaters can sign up for the contest, split into two age divisions (15 and younger, 16 and older), by paying a $10 entry fee and bringing two cans of food to donate.

Registration can be done online in advance or at the event beginning at 9 a.m. that day.

The event will include skateboarding legends, a surf contest at the jetty, food trucks, DJ Bennett Harrada, raffles, giveaways, vendors and an after event party with bands. Dave Duncan will host the event which is being filmed for a documentary with an expected release in 2014.

The contest hotline can be called at (310) 570-3678.
