Today in Venice-Mar Vista: Magic Show, Walgrove Wildlands, Garrett Leight Party

Get your hands dirty at the Walgrove Wildlands this Saturday.

Here are five things for your Friday and beyond in Venice-Mar Vista:

  1. A Funtastic Magic Show fundraiser happens Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Mark Twain Middle School, 2224 Walgrove Ave. The event, held mostly inside the auditorium, will include food trucks, snow cones, popcorn, balloons, face painters and an awesome interactive magic show with Jersey Jim at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance; $12 at the door. Children under 3 are admitted for no charge. Call (310) 313-3730 for information or click here. The event is organized by the Mar Vista School Enrichment Group.
  2. Garrett Leight California Optical is holding a party to celebrate their Venice store's fourth anniversary. Party details here.
  3. Help build the Walgrove Wildlands Saturday by joining others to move soil and build berms from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Kids, neighbors, friends are welcome! The Walgrove Wildlands, encompassing 25,000 square feet formerly occupied by six bungalows and covered with an asphalt hardscape, is being built on the Walgrove Elementary School campus, 1630 Walgrove Ave., to create a schoolyard habitat. Read about the project here.
  4. A change.org petition asking a medical marijuana business owner not to continue with his plans to move his business to 3472 S. Centinela Blvd. is online. The petition and comments are here.
  5. An online petition to "save" the neighborhood from the proposed development at 1414 Main St. is here.
