A Walking Guide to Super Bowl Fun

You don't even have to drive to get to these Mar Vista spots to eat, drink and watch the big game.

Come Super Bowl Sunday, try something different. Get out of the house and watch the game with your neighbors at one of these local joints. Have some pizza and beer and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow fans. Afterward, take the celebration into the evening and chow down on Asian fusion or British pub fare at two more neighborhood favorites.

Whether you’re rooting for the Steelers or the Packers, you’re sure to be a fan of one of the following neighborhood eateries. (Note: They’re all located on Washington Boulevard, within a few blocks of one another.) Put on your walking shoes, get a little exercise and have a super time. Let the best team win!

Pitfire Pizza is the ideal place to watch the Super bowl. It's got a TV, plenty of beer and the best pizza in town! The wood-fired pizzas are crisp, puffy and beautifully browned. Try the Burrata with wild arugula, caramelized onion, hazelnuts and a pesto drizzle. Besides pizza, the menu includes pasta, salads and paninis. The Farfalle with Sausage and Greens comes with kale and a touch of cream. Kids will enjoy mini- Mac ‘N Cheese and kid-sized pizza.

If you’d rather watch the game at home, you can pick-up any of Pitfire's Fireboxes (pizza or paninis, pasta, salad and Crazy Chocolate Cake), which feed from 4-20 people.

In honor of Super Bowl Sunday, Waterloo & City is opening its doors two hours earlier. In addition to the TV behind the bar, a big screen projector is being set up so fans can really enjoy the game. Super Bowl specials will include pizzas, sliders, chili, fried chicken and salads. A full range of charcuterie, appetizers, pasta and entrees are offered on the main menu. Gourmet pies include a braised short rib pizza with stilton and chimichurri and Indian Butter Chicken Pizza with a Murgh Makahni Sauce and mozzarella. No British meal would be complete without a bit of Sticky Toffee Pudding, served here with Milk Ice Cream and Salted Caramel. Sweet dreams.

After the game, head over to A-Frame (next door to Waterloo & City) for more post-game celebration. Community tables encourage conversation with strangers and after the Super Bowl game, there should be no problem chatting with your neighbor. Celebrate your team’s win with some bubbly, a house cocktail or choose from the selection of ales and stouts on tap. The vibe is casual and feels like a “modern picnic,” though picnic fare never fared so well. Try the Peruvian Beer Can Chicken, Citrus Shrimp or Korean-style BBQ Lamb Chops. Vegetarians will be very pleased with a Tofu Farmer’s Market Salad, Broccoli Rabe Tempura and a twice-baked, buttery duchesse potato with chives and a parmesan crust. Divine.

Room for dessert? If you’re walking, remember you’re burning more calories! Indulge in the Fried Apple Pie with Southern Comfort caramel and cheddar ice cream or the pound cake cinnamon churros with malted chocolate milk and vanilla ice cream. A sweet ending to a super sweet day.
