The Venice-based Jerde Partnership, an international architecture design and urban planning firm, which designed the renovations for Santa Monica Place, won in the Design and Development category.

Jerde is known for its mixed-use and retail developments that become major community hubs and transform the areas where they are located.

Santa Monica Place was purchased by Macerich in 1999.

"Our vision was to completely transform the property from a traditional mall into a new world-class outdoor destination that would attract the world's top retailers," Art Coppola, Chairman and CEO of Macerich, said. "That's exactly what we have accomplished."

“This center is an exceptional representation of the best in the industry for state of the art practices, setting it apart from the rest of the retail real estate industry,” said Michael P. Kercheval, president and CEO for ICSC.  “The VIVA Best-of-the-Best Award recognizes the tremendous efforts and achievements put forth by this year’s recipients, while setting a standard for what the retail real estate industry should expect from its owners and developers,” he added.

The center has plans to open The Art of Shaving, Camper, Kate Spade New York, and LeSportsac this summer.

The VIVA "Best-of-the-Best" Awards recognizes the most outstanding examples of shopping center design and development, marketing sustainability and community service.

Santa Monica Place opened in August 2010 as a revitalized version of the former Santa Monica Mall.
