Put Away Your BlackBerry, Put on Your High School Best

Your Oct. 5 FYI includes the CHP looking for drivers on their cell phones and picture day on campus.

1. CHP crackdown! The California Highway Patrol is out in force today looking for people texting or holding cell phones while driving. That's right, it's illegal to hold your phone while driving: No juggling it while on speaker phone, no using the phone's GPS, no playing Brick Breaker at stoplights. Consider yourself warned.

2. The Friends of Walgrove booster club is meeting tonight at 6:30 to celebrate the new school year. Child care will be available for $3 a child in the auditorium. Stop by and get involved.

3. In other school news, Venice High is having picture days today through Thursday, so look sharp. Think of it as a chance to forever remember your faux hawk, or whatever the kids are rocking these days.

4. From Vancouver to Venice: The Hotel Erwin is hosting a fundraiser and reception tonight at 6 for Lt. Rudy Pospisil, a Vancouver firefighter and cancer survivor who is going from Canada to Mexico to raise money for cancer research at centers across North America, including at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Care Center.

5. Tuesday nights are salsa nights at the Air Conditioned Supper Club, so if you're ready to shimmy the clouds away, check out the lessons at 8 p.m., followed by an all-out get-down at 10 p.m.
