Styrofoam Ban, Funds for Japan and a Sunny Start to Memorial Day Weekend

Welcome to our newest column, Five Things. Here are five things you should know for May 27.

1. The West Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (WLANC) unanimously passed a resolution Thursday night calling on the city of Los Angeles to support Long Beach state Sen. Alan Lowenthal’s SB-568, a statewide ban on food containers made from Styrofoam. Former Mar Vista Council member Andy Shrader introduced the resolution.

2. The performance by the Los Angeles Matsuri Taiko Drum Ensemble at the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market on May 15 raised $1,667 for victims of the Japanese tsuanmi and earthquake. The funds will be sent to Pastor Tatsuya Shindo in Kawaguchi City in Saitama, Japan, and then on to Pastor Nakazawa in Sendei and distributed directly to disaster victims. Thanks to everyone who donated!

3. Get involved in pothole patrol. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Bureau of Street Services will enact Operation Pothole on June 4 and 5 when nearly 100 City Street Services crew members attempt to fill 20,000 potholes in the city. If there are potholes in the area, make sure you report them on the city’s website or call 311. Also, let Mar Vista Patch know where the worst potholes in the area are by posting them in the comments section. Feel free to send in photos as well. We’ll put them up on the site.
