Top Ten Mar Vista Patch Stories of 2011

For a quiet neighborhood, Mar Vista saw tragedies and triumphs this year.

Mar Vista Patch is nearly a year old. As we say goodbye to 2011, here are our top 10  trafficked stories of the year.

1. , Aug. 17. Patch interview the contest winner after locals  and  were eliminated from the FOX reality TV show MasterChef.

2. , Aug. 23. The Girls Gone Wild founder turned himself into police in Mar Vista on charges of false imprisonment.

3. Jun. 23. A gunman killed two and injured one person sitting in the bleachers at Penmar Park.

4. , June 28. Amid the hype of “Carmageddon” when the 405 freeway was temporarily closed for bridge demolition, this couple decided to make it their day.

5. , Jun. 23. Readers remained acutely interested in the shooting at Penmar Park. The police identified the young victims the day after they were killed. 

6., Aug. 9. Kontos was giving demonstrations at the Mar Vista Farmers Market before she became a contest on the FOX show. She made it to the top six before she was eliminated. 

7. , Oct. 11. Officers shot a man who had previously been stopped for a possible DUI violation. He refused to put down his knife at officers’ command. 

8. , Sept. 3. After a small plane crashed into a home during a botched take-off from Santa Monica Aiport, (See no. 10 on this list.) Santa Monica city officials went to Washington to meet with FAA staff to discuss revision of the flight school leases.

9. , April 12. Kelly Hartog, Mar Vista Patch penned this opinion piece about the many reversals in the police account of the bombing of a synagogue in Santa Monica.

10. . Aug. 29. The pilot, who rented the plane from one of the airport flight schools suffered a broken leg. A man working on the house was also injured.
