Week in Review: MVCC Fills Vacancies, LAUSD to Sue State, and Opposition to Postponing Neighborhood Council Elections.

Also, MVCC moves to ask City to replace lawn with sustainable plants and Patch's Deck Your House Contest.

Here’s what’s been happening in Mar Vista this week, Dec. 12-18.

1. The Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC) filled two empty seats and replaced its officers in a harmonious meeting following last month’s abrupt resignation of the council’s Chair, Albert Olson. The Council approved the appointments of Yvette Molinari for the at-large seat and Michael Millman for the Zone 4 position. Sharon Commins was chosen as the new Chair of the board.

2. The Los Angeles Unified School District announced it would sue the State to stop new mid-year cuts to its transportation budget. The district argues the cuts would prevent it from carrying out constitutionally and legally mandated services that provide integration opportunities and access to appropriate schools for disabled students.

3. The city’s Arts, Parks and Neighborhoods Committee and several local neighborhood councils, including the MVCC came out in opposition to the city’s plan to postpone elections for the neighborhood councils for two years as a cost saving measure. Opponents of the plan said it undermines local democracy and will delegitimize neighborhood councils.

4. The MVCC moved to ask the city council not to replace the ruined lawn at City Hall with more grass, but rather to show Los Angeles’ environmental leadership by replacing the sod trampled by Occupy LA with sustainable plants.

5. Patch.com is launching a nationwide contest to find the best dressed home in its Patch communities, and the winner’s school will receive $100,000, no strings attached.
