Week in Review: Test Scores Released, Creating a Buzz and Joe Francis arrested

This week the California Department of Education released the results of its standardized test scores. Here are our top five stories from Aug. 21 – 27.

1. Mar Vista Elementary had when the California Department of Education released the standardized testing scores for the last school year.  Ninety four percent of Mar Vista Elementary’s fourth-graders scored either proficient or advanced in English-language arts and 90 percent of fourth-graders scored either proficient or advanced in mathematics.

Also, preliminary results from the California Department of Education showed that nearly 80 percent of passed the English-language arts component of the California High School Exit Examination and 80 percent passed in mathematics.

2. Over 100 people turned out over the weekend to see The Vanishing of the Bees at the Mar Vista library, celebrate and lend their support to lobbying the LA City Council to start a pilot beekeeping project in Mar Vista.

3. walked into Mar Vista’s Pacific Division station on Monday night with his attorney. Francis was charged with false imprisonment and other misdemeanors and was released on bail.

4. The Los Angeles City Council agreed to sign a new contract Friday with a Florida-based company to . The contract is with Martin Outdoor Media. The contract would require the company to pay $2.6 million in advertising revenue over a 10-year period.

5. The first CIF Southern Section preseason sports polls of the fall season have been released and Windward School is ranked No. 4 in .
