Yoga: Happy Solstice to Your Inner Sun!

Join with the special rhythms of the Solstice. Here are some ideas to keep in mind to celebrate this first day of Summer.

Today is the first day of Summer and the longest light of the year. From Latin, the word “Solstice” refers to the way that the sun seems to suspend in stillness. This pause reflects the sort of liminal time at the corners of the year, the magic space between what has been done and what is yet to come.

The corners of the year have been acknowledged by many cultures around the world and through history as important spiritual times. It is believed that the veil between worlds is thin. But don’t let the idea of spirituality get you too serious! This solstice is mostly about celebration, leisure, and play. The planting of crops is done, and the harvest is yet to come. So now it is time to enjoy and hope the sun glows strong.

Many Summer Solstice rituals have to do with helping the warmth of the sun, such as building bon fires and gathering with friends. Your inner sun can reflect and invite the goodness of the sun in the sky to bring energy through our food and happiness through our skin. Take time to check in with your inner sun today. That energy, that life within you. If it feels like in busy-ness you’ve gotten far away from this life, simply return. No details, nothing to figure out. Smile into this sun. Make sure to let the sun kiss your skin today.

Get out in nature with a spirit of light-hearted play. A respect that comes from joy and love, rather than from mandate or responsibility. Maybe make a necklace out of flowers or create a ritual of your own to join with this special rhythm of nature. And, whatever you are doing, keep your eyes open for fairies. There is probably more magic around than you think.
