Venice Council to Hear Zipline Proposal for Venice Beach

A Canadian-based company is hoping to install a 750-foot zipline ride this summer on Venice Beach.

The Venice Neighborhood Council at its May 15 board meeting will consider a 750-foot long "zipline" ride proposed for installation this summer on Venice Beach.

The ride would be installed on the grassy area at the end of Windward Avenue between Horizon Avenue and 17th Avenue, according to a press release from the Venice Neighborhood Council. The ride would be built and operated by Canadian-based Greenheart Conservation Company.

Zipline riders would climb a stairway to the 45-foot level of a tower on the north end of the grassy area and then get strapped into a harness attached to a line. The riders would then fly to the landing tower near the basketball courts to the south at speeds up to 25 mph.

The permit terms would allow Greenheart to install the attraction for three months this summer on a temporary basis as a pilot program. The ride would be removed and future installations would depend on the success of the pilot program.

The board will be given a presentation by Greenheart and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and will be asked to make a recommendation to the city about whether the temporary project should move forward.

Plans for a 175-foot tall Ferris wheel on Venice Beach were pulled recently after strong opposition from the Venice community was voiced.

The Venice Neighborhood Council meeting will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at 1010 Abbot Kinney Blvd. in the elementary school auditorium.
