Man Wielding Machete Holes Up on Rose Avenue in Venice

Los Angeles police talked a man who was wielding a machete out of a house in the 800 block of Rose Avenue in Venice.

A man wielding a machete holed himself up in a house on the 800 block of Rose Avenue in Venice on Thursday night until police were able to coax him out, authorities said.

The man was "seriously drunk" during the incident that started about 10 p.m. and continued with a police helicopter overhead until about 11:30 p.m., said Sgt. Craig Brown of the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division. After police talked the man out of the house, he was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and would be placed under a medical hold for 72 hours, Brown said.

A man suffering from a mental illness also barricaded himself in June in the Marina Peninsula and another drunken man was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation in January after the LAPD's acclaimed SWAT unit used an armored truck to wake him on the south jetty in Playa del Rey and disarm him of a pistol.
