Venice Man, 23, Shot and Killed

A 23-year-old Venice man is shot and killed Monday night in the 600 block of Santa Clara Avenue.

A 23-year-old man was shot in the head and killed Monday night in the 600 block of Santa Clara Avenue in Venice, police said.

The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. and the victim was found in the road with a single gunshot wound to his head, said Sgt. Craig Brown of the Los Angeles Polilce Department's Pacific Division. The victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead about 11 p.m., Brown said.

Police identified the victim as Oscar Duncan of Venice.

Duncan worked at the teen center at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice and grew up as a member of the club. In 2006, Duncan was named the Venice club's Youth of the Year and went on to create gospel-inspired hip-hop and performed as a dancer, according to his Web site.

In a YouTube video, Duncan called himself "Choir Boy" and said he was doing mentoring, coaching and outreach at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice.

"I'm from Venice, California, born and raised. I love Venice, California, it's a beautiful place, there's no place like it," he said in the video. The "Choir Boy" nickname was a testament by friends to his singing voice and a reflection of his commitment to God, Duncan said.

The case has been assigned to the LAPD's West Bureau homicide division and the motive for the shooting was not immediately known, Brown said.

There was no suspect information and no arrest had been made.

No further information was immediately available.

(Editor's Note: Updated at 9:12 a.m. to add that Duncan worked at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice.)

sometimes God calls home his very best.I rec'd a call this morning 1:41 am from my son Jorge he was upset .explained that a co-worker was shot and killed, I was horrified as he explained the circumstances of the incident ,heart broken for the family and my son,who told me what a terrific man oscar was,and how he was such a positive role model at the boys and girls club, what a fantastic job he was doing with the youth as a musical director and how he was such a great guy,he couldnt understand why anyone would want to harm such wonderful person,I didnt have an answer .It breaks my heart to think these unspeakable things happen.GOD has indeed called one of his best home and many people will feel the loss here on this earth, oscar you will be missed and although you life was indeed short rest assured you did manage to touch lives that will never be the same.may GOD's love and peace envelope the family of Pastor Duncan and all those including my wonderful son Jorge Valladares whose hearts are broken tonight With much love and admiration Anita Clark.( God bless and rest assured Pasture Duncans work for God has only just begun as now he watches over us all as a guardian Angel)

Oscar you had a place in my little ones heart. Paige respected you as a man of Gid and her coach at ge Boys and Gurls club. This was her first experience in such a setting and you made it memorable for her. A she seen the news she cries out "no not my coach, why did they do that". But I explained to her you are with God having a great time singing, laughing and coaching the kids in heaven. With that said Oscar I know you have done your job on earth and now in heaven making another mark.
