A 23-year-old man was shot in the head and killed Monday night in the 600 block of Santa Clara Avenue in Venice, police said.

The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. and the victim was found in the road with a single gunshot wound to his head, said Sgt. Craig Brown of the Los Angeles Polilce Department's Pacific Division. The victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead about 11 p.m., Brown said.

Police identified the victim as Oscar Duncan of Venice.

Duncan worked at the teen center at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice and grew up as a member of the club. In 2006, Duncan was named the Venice club's Youth of the Year and went on to create gospel-inspired hip-hop and performed as a dancer, according to his Web site.

In a YouTube video, Duncan called himself "Choir Boy" and said he was doing mentoring, coaching and outreach at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice.

"I'm from Venice, California, born and raised. I love Venice, California, it's a beautiful place, there's no place like it," he said in the video. The "Choir Boy" nickname was a testament by friends to his singing voice and a reflection of his commitment to God, Duncan said.
