perhaps now that the election is over, kline can return to holding monthly meetings of his committee, keeping minutes, updating the web page, doing the job he signed up for, etc.
David Ewing October 29, 2012 at 03:28 PM
Do we know the number of voters who turned out yesterday?
Alex Shreds October 29, 2012 at 04:00 PM
Hey Spirit of Venice, You need to check your math skills. 1,300 is over 4% of the Venice's population of 31k, not less than 1/2 of 1% as you declare. Just trying to help.
David Carini (Editor) October 29, 2012 at 04:12 PM
1,593. But that is not an official tally yet.
Ray Davis October 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM
" the hateful discussions on PATCH's evil twin blogsite "YO VENICE"" Really? I find your monopolizing of any discussions here to be far more hateful and off-putting than anywhere else. Tiresome having to skip over your religious nonsense that dominate the comments on every single story. How about you practice what you preach?
Spirit Of Venice October 29, 2012 at 11:18 PM
REALITY CHECK - So glad to see that the voters overwhelmingly (BY A MARGIN OF ALMOST TWO-TO-ONE) approved Linda Lucks's performance as Council President for the last two years and decided to stay with a proven winner...this is great news for Venice... - B-U-T... - ...but, those of us who speak out on this PATCH site need to take a deep breath and let go of any undue delusions of influence that we may have. - Of Venice's population of 31,000 people, not quite 1,600 voted - that's JUST UNDER 5%. And I have talked to a lot of those who did vote and who told me that they do not follow news or blogs on Venice-Mar Vista PATCH. - So, while it is wonderful that a small number of Venice residents participate in PATCH discussions (and maybe not so wonderful that ANYBODY participates in the hateful discussions on PATCH's evil twin blogsite "YO VENICE"), we need to get over ourselves and realize that our influence is limited - I mean, to hear some people talk here, you'd think we were the decision-making body for the United States Government. - Let's all take a chill pill. These conversations are fun, informative, and valuable - and no-doubt they do have SOME influence of the thinking of some people in our community - but let's not get too full of our own importance here. - Congratulations Linda and all the other winners. Thanks for all you do for this community.
Spirit Of Venice October 29, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Alex is referring to some really bad math I offered when computing the percentages of voters compared to overall Venice population. He was absolutely right (thanks for pointing it out Alex), and I have revised the post and re-entered it below.
Ray Davis October 30, 2012 at 07:02 PM
Yo is not a hate site. Quite frankly, nothing on that site comes close to the hatred and bile you spew all over this website. How about you practice what you preach?
swankgirlvenice October 30, 2012 at 07:09 PM
The City of LA estimated the population of Venice to be around 42,000 in 2009 - http://cityplanning.lacity.org/DRU/Locl/LocPfl.cfm?geo=CP&loc=Ven&yrx=Y09 So if 1600 people voted, the percentage of voters is more like 4% of the total population.... which is an unfortunately low number.
Ray Davis October 30, 2012 at 07:44 PM
Linda will continue to do great things for this community like...ah...you know...ummm... What has she done exactly?
tliw October 30, 2012 at 09:41 PM
Bud Jacobs does not live in Venice!! Why and how did he qualify to be on the ballot...?
Spirit Of Venice October 31, 2012 at 04:52 PM
Yo is a hate site. Quite frankly, nothing on this site comes close to the hatred and the bile that is spewed all over that site by it's mostly mean-spirited, arrogant, self-aggrandizing and egotistical participants. - I hate lies. I hate bullies. I hate what I perceive to be evil and I will continue to speak out against it and expose it wherever I encounter it and in words which reflect my feelings about it.
Spirit Of Venice October 31, 2012 at 04:59 PM
I don't know, Ray, why don't you ask the almost 900 people who voted for her by a margin of almost two-to-one against her opponent? Linda has a record of actually SERVING this community for over 4 decades. - She's not like you. She doesn't spend her time sitting in front of a mirror, typing cheap-shots and posting them to a blog site. - I realize that your petty, selfish little interests were thwarted when the voting members of our community gave Linda her well-deserved affirmation - but you can sit here for the next two years writing insults, ridicule and angry comments, Linda will be presiding over the Venice Neighborhood Council and doing her utmost to safeguard the interests and well-being of ALL of the members of our community - not just the elitist-wannabees.
Spirit Of Venice October 31, 2012 at 05:04 PM
Assuming this is a real question, people who WORK in Venice are allowed to hold positions on VNC.
Ray Davis October 31, 2012 at 05:49 PM
"I don't know, Ray, why don't you ask the almost 900 people who voted for her by a margin of almost two-to-one against her opponent?" Well, I was asking her. But why don't you answer? As you can see by SOV's hateful rant, Linda has done nothing to help Venice or its residents. Can't think of anything to crow about so SOV just spits bile as usual. Funny how the people who hide behind religion are usually the biggest hypocrites.
Spirit Of Venice October 31, 2012 at 06:58 PM
No, Ray, you were asking people ABOUT her...if you were asking HER, you would have said "...what have YOU done exactly?". - See, it's called "English". - So since you were asking US, not her, about her, it is totally appropriate for me to respond. And all I did was point out that 900 people think that Linda has done a lot for Venice already and will continue to do good for Venice. - But, anyway, now you're just being silly...you big doh doh you... what a silly guy...jeez. - You're still trying to convince people not to support Linda. It's over, dude. You lost. - Got a flash for you. Nobody's reading this thread any more. You guys had your big chance to smear Linda with false accusations of impropriety, and it didn't work. - See...she got re-elected. Now it doesn't matter how you try to knock her...it's too late. - You don't GET that? Wow. What a silly guy. - By the way, I truly am flattered by how much you are imitating the things I say and the way that I say them. You're right...I'm a good writer...but, here's the thing... it's not about good writing... it's about the validity of the views I am expressing. - You big silly guy, you. - Just silly. - I'll wait while you post some more venomous (that's my free gift to you, a brand new word you can steal from me and try to use against me - "venomous") and now irrelavent nonsense, then make my final post to this thread that nobody is reading any more. - Go ahead.
Ray Davis October 31, 2012 at 07:40 PM
And you cannot tell me one single accomplishment, you silly girl!
David Ewing October 31, 2012 at 08:41 PM
Ray said to SOV re: Linda Lucks, "And you cannot tell me one single accomplishment, you silly girl!" I can't speak for SOV, but am pretty thrilled to see the disappearance of crap vendors on Ocean Front Walk. That was accomplished by pulling representatives of a variety of disparate interests together in a committee and forging a plan that would do the job and stay within the law. Great work, Linda. Congratulations and thanks to all on the committee.
David Ewing October 31, 2012 at 08:54 PM
It's a low number, but compared to surrounding NCs, it's HUGE. We had nearly twice as many voters as Mar Vista, Westchester, and Del Rey COMBINED. Del Rey had a Community Officer elected by one vote - which is not so surprising except that he beat his competitor by two votes to one! Sure, we need to keep working on outreach, but lets not pretend that Venice is a straggler when our voter engagement is actually in the forefront of all the City's NCs.
Spirit Of Venice October 31, 2012 at 11:58 PM
See, I realize that probably less than 10 people are still following this thread. The world has moved on. The good guys won this battle and it is over. - But, I am a writer. It is like breathing to me. I can do it all day long, and for the sake of anyone still paying attention, I am going to take this opportunity to expand - and expound - on my point of view here. - Take a look at Ray's PATCH ID page - he has been against homeless people, poor people, VNC itself, social services and Linda from the beginning of his posting life many months ago. - It's not like he's just a civic minded citizen who decided to join the conversation because he thinks Linda needs to be criticized - this has been his agenda from the beginning. He's one of "them",and antagonizing "us" is his game. - IF we let him. - - Do you remember Walt Disney's movie "Uncle Remus"? - Uncle Remus was an old plantation-slave black man. In the movie he tells a story about "Bre'r Rabbit and the Tar Baby". This baby, made of tar, would antagonize Bre'r Rabbit, and Bre'r Rabbit would punch at him trying to get away, only every punch or kick only got Bre'r Rabbit more stuck in the tar. - Moral : Don't punch small children made out of tar. - CONTINUED -
Spirit Of Venice November 01, 2012 at 12:00 AM
CONTINUED - Part 2 - The lesson of Bre'r Rabbit is important for all of us. - As far as when, and when NOT, to engage in a dialogue with an antagonist in this forum, The Bible ALSO has a couple of helpful ideas to contribute along the same lines. - The Book Of Proverbs is one of the more popular books of the Bible. Most of its little one-line gems of wisdom are attributed to King Solomon, who has historically been considered one of the - if not "THE" - wisest men to walk the planet. - Proverbs 29:9 says " If a wise man hath a controversy with a foolish man, whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest." (BBE Translation). - The MSG Translation puts it this way : "A sage trying to work things out with a fool gets only scorn and sarcasm for his trouble." - The CJB Translation : "When a wise man argues with a foolish one, he meets anger and ridicule without relief" - Well, you get the idea. No matter what approach a reasonable person takes in arguing with a fool, there isn't going to be any resolution of the question - just vexation of spirit. - Of course, deciding who is and isn't a fool is a judgement call each of us has to make for ourselves. The Bible is only telling us what the outcome of the discussion will be. - CONT.
Spirit Of Venice November 01, 2012 at 12:02 AM
CONT - Part 3 - One more Proverb, if you will. - Proverbs 14:17 states : "Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge" (WBT Translation). - The CJB Translation puts it this way : "Keep clear of a fool, for you won't hear a sensible word from him" - I think I like the MSG Translation version the best, myself : - "Escape quickly from the company of fools; they're a waste of your time, a waste of your words." - Enough said? I would think so. - Just let me add that THIS battle (and it was an important one) is over, and the good guys won. But let's not forget that "The price of freedom is vigilance" - we cannot afford to go to sleep at the switch..."they" aren't about to give up. - For "Free Venice" to STAY free, we all need to stay on our toes. - PS - The greatest single contribution anyone has made to the quality of life in Venice in my memory is removing crap-merchandise vendors from the west side of the Boardwalk. That alone is more than enough reason to support Linda for a second term. -
Nancy November 01, 2012 at 05:20 AM
Yep. I used to read and post on YoVenice until I was bullied out of there. It was so bad that I wrote to the guy who runs the site: "You allow that?!" As much as I love freedom of expression, visiting the forum on Yo made me feel dirty and depressed.
Linda Lucks November 05, 2012 at 03:38 AM
The Venice Neighborhood Council established one seat on the board of 21 officers for a "factual basis stakeholder" when the LA City Council expanded the definitition of stakeholder beyone "anyone who lives, works, or owns property" in their community. As the longtime principal of Venice High School, Bud Jacobs qualified to run for the Factual Basis Stakeholder seat. We will miss Amanda Seward, the board member who held that seat for the last two years and worked very hard for Venice. But, Bud Jacobs is a perfect person to hold the position.
Spirit Of Venice November 05, 2012 at 03:48 AM
Well, Linda, I guess the honeymoon is over. A wonderful longtime Venice resident named Therese was also running for the FBS position, and I know that I and a whole lot of other people in Venice wanted to vote for her...only the FBS position was not on our ballots. Turns out that somebody decided that since it was a position to be held by someone not living in Venice, that only people who don't live in Venice could vote on it...which makes NO sense to me. She lost 10 votes to 4 out of over 1,600 who cast votes in the overall VNC elections. - I'm crying "foul". This position should have been voted on by everyone who voted in this election, and if it had been, I think Therese would probably have won. - No fair!
Spirit Of Venice November 05, 2012 at 03:52 AM
PS- While Therese doesn't live in Venice NOW (FBS must be a non-resident) she has in years past, and she has been manning (womanizing) a "free-speech" table on the Boardwalk almost every day for years as well. She has been an invaluable member of our community and has been a champion of free speech and political honesty to the benefit of residents, visitors, tourists and citizens. - She should have had a more open shot at this office.
