Homeless Storage Pilot Program Concludes For Winter 2013

The 5-week test-run of the City's Homeless-Storage Facility in Venice was a success. It went off without a hitch, despite dire warnings by its opponents.

Venice Community Housing Corporation's pilot program offering free storage to homeless individuals and families concluded March 1st with the scheduled end of the City's winter shelter program. During this initial 5 week test-run no problems were reported, and many people were helped.

Since late January "Check-In Storage Venice" offered secure storage of personal property to unhoused people who wished to go to the City's winter shelter in West LA but had too many belongings to take with them to the facility. As a result of its operation approximately 36 additional people without homes were able to access the City's free emergency cold-weather shelter and also to avail themselves of the various supportive and counseling services offered there.

The storage facility, located adjacent the Venice Police Substation at Windward Avenue - 1/2 block west of Ocean Front Walk ("The Boardwalk"), was open daily from 3-5 p.m. and staffed entirely by volunteers.

The program was a partnership between VCH, the City of LA, and Council District 11, and was made possible with the support of the Venice Family Clinic, Occupy Venice and committed volunteers.
