What's Up: Coding for Teens, Change.org Petition, Middle School Forum, Neighborhood Coffee with Bonin, Housing Rights

Mar Vista residents have launched an online petition against a medical marijuana shop re-locating to their community.

Here are five things for your Monday and beyond in Venice-Mar Vista:  

  1. Google engineers will offer a hands-on discussion and introduction to programming basics through gaming technology for teens Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Abbott Kinney Memorial Public Library, 501 S. Venice Blvd. Computers will provided by the library. Space is limited; sign-up required.
  2. A change.org petition asking a medical marijuana business owner not to continue with his plans to move his business to 3472 S. Centinela Blvd. is online. The petition and comments are here.
  3. The Los Angeles Housing and Community Investment Department (HCIDLA) Rent Stabilization Division and the Housing Rights Center are presenting a workshop on fair housing tenant's rights and more on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the City's West Regional Office, 1645 Corinth Ave., Los Angeles in Room 200.   4. A forum on public middle schools will be held Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m. at Mark Twain Middle School and World Languages Magnet, 2224 Walgrove Ave., Venice. Representatives from 12 middle schools are expected to provide information about their middle school. Middle school list here.
  5. City Council member Mike Bonin, who represents Venice and Mar Vista, will hold a Neighborhood Coffee Saturday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, 13420 Maxella Ave., Marina del Rey. The coffee is part of Bonin's "Access 11" campaign to keep his 11th District constituents informed.
