Transit oriented developments will always be overly dense. They will almost certainly be mixed use…Read More and will have other common features like zero set back, low income and low low income unit quotas, Bike paths and other zoning waivers. These had picked developers get exclusive negotiation privileges from the Metro Authority. Surf Metro's website for proof of that. These features are proscribed by the regional planning boards (unelected ) in every part of the country. The only areas free to stop this kind of thing are elected state and county jurisdictions that have voted to keep ICLEI and the Agenda 21 planning overlays out of their planning departments. L.A County is a member of ICLEI and there in lies our problem. research Agenda 21 and ICLEI if you want to understand the source and scope of our problem. Greedy developers are just the tip of the iceberg.

I have completely given up on the LA City Planners and city council members who seem to green light…Read More these carpet bagger's who have over developed this city. The Playa Vista project and the continuous development of Marina Del Rey are prime examples of our so called "leaders" not having a clue. The result is intolerable traffic and over population that has ruined our communities here on the West side. Let me ask this question: Have any of these people spent any time studying the aftermath of these decisions? When was the last time any of these idiots attempted to drive from Venice to LAX? It used to take me 7 minutes. It now takes upwards of 30 minutes on some occasions. Lincoln Blvd has become the new 405 and we have the city planners to thank for this mess and all because of the obvious greed of revenue that these projects create. Steve Soboroff and Alan Casden are successful because of these green light habits of our incompetent decision makers. Enough is never enough for these scumbags.

Points well taken. My bottom line -- I would send my kids to the best program I can find within…Read More public sector. I have no desire to see existing schools gutted either. I'd encourage parents at VHS to speak directly with Incubator's founder about a collaborative co-location plan and to Deasy/Zimmer about how to not fund pilots at traditional school expense. I salute your progress and lament the losses at VHS and hope for restored funding for all...

RB - I've been a parent at VHS for 5 years now. How can the Incubator be collaborative? It is by…Read More definition a parasite. The host school gives up space, classrooms, gym, and offices, and gets NOTHING in return. The Incubator offers small classes and exciting programs which the host cannot. How can the host students feel anything but slighted? Reduced funding because students are leaving VHS for charters and pilots has caused the following programs to disappear from Venice: Marching Band, Metal Shop, Wood Shop, Culinary Arts Academy, Instrumental Music, Photography, Art and others. On the chopping block as we speak are Auto Shop, Print shop (a 3 million dollar state of the art facility installed at VHS because parents and others DID write grants). I am personally involved and have been instrumental in getting funding for both the STEMM magnet and the Robotics Team (which has done better in competitions than many area private schools). Our Robotics Team uses a 'empty' classroom as our lab. If the Pilot School were to take the room, we'd cease to exist.
The facts are that this particular pilot school has ties to GREEN DOT and Steve Barr (who has not explained why he left Green Dot). Green Dot does not have such a great track record, see http://www.lasentinel.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1085:the-green-dot-formula-for-better-or-worse&catid=80&Itemid=170
There are some wonderful choices within LAUSD Magnet Program. My son's class of 2012 was probably the last class to access a great education in the comprehensive school. Most of his excellent teachers either retired or were forced out due to RIF's. If you want traditional schools to embrace change, work for it within the traditional schools. Adding quasi-pilots and county charters just pulls funds from LAUSD and hurts students.
And bottom line - middle school students do not belong on a high school campus.

I'm a parent of a rising 6th grader. My kids currently attend a magnet school, but we've also…Read More experienced a traditional school with co-location. I live within VHS boundaries and toured it in the fall. I want to send my kids to the best option out there for them, whether charter, magnet, pilot, or SAS.
I believe that ALL schools need to be better funded, better supported and have all the resources they need to provide excellent learning environments to all their kids. That said, I am interested in Incubator because they are daring to present a new, innovative model. It is a misconception that it is a Green Dot school. It's a LAUSD "Pilot" school, which is meant to be a small learning community fostering new concepts that can be shared within LAUSD.
Read more about pilots here: http://bit.ly/19ao33K
I also agree that Venice HS has some fantastic programs and serves the community.I thought the magnet was great and the kids impressive. I think the new STEM magnet should be great too (I hope so). I did also notice that one of the magnet physics classes had 50 kids in it - which is ridiculous.
I know that all colocations seem to be fraught us vs them situations and Incubator wants to colocate collaboratively, if the host school is open to that. Some of "extra" funding for Incubator will come from grants and partnerships - and any school or group of parents can, and should, write grants, fundraise, and seek to build partnerships with local organizations.
It's equally likely that my kids could end up at Incubator for high school or at Venice HS in one of their magnet programs. Or maybe my kid will want an arts program and end up Hamilton or LACHSA.
But I do believe in Incubator's mission and philosophy and wish more traditional LAUSD schools were embracing some of their ideals and practices.
I wouldn't want one school to succeed at the expense of the other. Everyone needs choices, and at least Incubator is an LAUSD, unionized pilot program. If you want the facts about it, they have info posted here:

Above is a PDF from LA City that says on page 3 that it is 600' from religious worship.
Whoever writes these articles needs to do some fact checking. Or at least be able to back up their comments with some sort of documentation.
Not only is this new Patch format inferior to the old layout, so seems to be the reporting as well.

Hey Cal, This was actually my fault. Because I spend so much time on Moorpark Patch, I think I…Read More automatically typed in "Moorpark" when helping out with getting the LA election news onto the Patch sites in Los Angeles . . . Usually when I make a silly mistake like this, I'll fix it behind the scenes before anything actually gets published. Last night, I found out one of the glitches to be ironed out in our new platform is items posted directly from other sites can't be deleted without deleting the original. Hopefully our tech genies get that fixed soon, but in the mean time, I'll definitely be more careful and keep our local site local (at least as much as I can. Some of the sponsored content is beyond my control).

Don't hold your breath ..garcetti was pandering for votes the day he voted against LAX expansion.he…Read More knew full well it had the votes to pass. It was all a show..he became their hero.He cared nothing about his own communities in Hollywood..he will not do damn thing to protect Westchester communities.
Bill Rosendahl knows this..he supported Greuel
With Garcetti, the Millennium skyscraper developer funded and Hollywood Chamber supported Mayor and his Deputy, inheriting his CD 13 council seat, also Millennium developer funded and Hollywood Chamber supported ..Hollywood is finished.Pack up, sell and leave..before it's too late!Just as garcetti told us we all should do on the floor of council the day he got the Hollywood Community higher density Plan approved,to accommodate his developer funders projects...'If you dont like living in higher density Hollywood ..leave'..nice guy. That is how he 'engaged and listened to' communities and why there are now three law suits against the HCP and litigation against his developer funder massive projects.this is his legacy in Hollywood. And MORE crime in our communities, more shootouts, in the streets and in the nightclubs he encouraged the proliferation of. His 'Savior of Hollywood' PR was all bull.
Greuel may have been supported by the unions but he certainly was not 'INDEPENDENT"..HE LIES... He sold Hollywood to his wealthy NYC developer funders, and he will sell other areas of L.A. to them too.
Wait till he gets the Eminant Domain thing through for his developer funders.. those that voted for him..hope it is not your homes the city takes away for his developer projects! Sad and tragic, so few knew all the developer illegalities this guy has been involved in AND GOT AWAY WITH..Greuel campaign was WAY too soft on him. HE led city council voting to raise DWP salaries and wanted DWP support, when he did not get it he destroyed her and demonized them. 'Know thine enemy', his campaign was like the mafia.. dont cross them..but if you want to beat them.. you better be prepared to come out with gloves on and go after THEM..And there was alot to go after..and be willing to NOT run a 'classy' campaign. It's never too late for investigations!

A warning for those running for office.
1. Don't pander to unions; ie, IBEW/DWP. Folks look at their…Read More DWP bill and think, hmmmm is this bill going to be higher 2. Keep outside folks like Clinton and Boxer out of local elections. Guys vote also so all the talk about the first woman mayor may be okay, but don't make it a big platform item. There you have it all free of charge.
